It all seems so simple to carry the baton one lap around the track.

Four girls in red hold a common goal - to carry it safely, and faster than anyone else can.

Each exactly tuned to her own section of track, corner or straightaway, but knowing success depends on the moment of exchange.

Constant practice assures that the word “stick” signals the time when two bodies at full intensity; one accelerating and one slowing, blend for an instant.

Without hesitation the baton to be firmly placed into the hand of the next courier.

Perfection rests on the edge of disaster.

So each runs her individual race, knees lifting arms pumping
in nearly reckless abandon. Faster than the mind can think but in natural motion.

The sum total punctuated by the successful exchange.

Repeated three times the final runner brings home the baton
to the cheering of a crowd in awe of the speed and skill.
