Who Knows?
Did that get your interest? “Who knows what?” you might ask. It depends on the question. So here are some questions and maybe some answers. For each of the questions in bold pretend you are asking them!
What does the coach know?
I know I don’t have all the answers. As you read along you will find out that you might know some things that I don’t. And I know some things you might not know yet. But one thing I know is that the two of us together will get further than either of us separately.
I know what has driven North Attleboro to team success over the last 24 years.
I’m not quite sure where it came from but over the last 24 years the teams I’ve coached have expected to win. They haven’t had a losing season since 1978. Expectations are always high. There is incredible team spirit. We love relays because it involves more team effort. We celebrate the success of others.
I know what ingredients have made past athletes successful.
North Attleboro athletes believe in what they do. They have an incredible record of individual success. There have been numerous state champions, state class champions and Hockomock Champions. They also meet high standards of conduct. I constantly get comments from other coaches about the manner with which they conduct themselves. Integrity is one of those characteristics that are internally held. One only needs to look in a mirror to tell if they have it. I constantly ask athletes to be able to meet the expectations of the person they face in the mirror. They also set goals. They meet their potential.
I know track and field.
Ask any of my past athletes. I love track and field. That 400M circle of red defines my life more clearly than any other symbol. I ask two things. Give it a try and give it your best try! I’ll do everything I can to make you as good as you want to be.
I know how to recognize potential.
Potential is a fairly recognizable quality. If you have speed, endurance or strength it will translate into potential in track. There are so many different events that need so many different types of athletes. So if I see a person who exhibits strength, endurance or speed I will probably ask them to try to use those gifts. But potential is not result. There are other factors.
I don’t know what you’ll bring to the team.
It is the other factors that determine what you’ll bring to a team. Are you team oriented? Are you positive? Are you dependable? Are you adaptable? Those aren’t immediately apparent!
How good will I be?
Sorry. Don’t know that. Athletes don’t all fit the same mold because there are intangibles. There’s a name for the other necessary factors to consider. Heart, dedication, durability, resilience. All these are important to help someone meet their potential. But these are not as apparent as strength, size and speed. So only time will tell if you have what it takes. I can tell you if you have some of the necessary ingredients to be good, but you supply the rest.
Will I have fun?
Ask someone who is on the team. All find fun in their own way. We smile, we work hard. We strive, we celebrate. We sweat, we laugh. We win, we lose. You make what you want of it.
What will be expected of me?
Total dedication
Total effort
Team spirit
Positive attitude
Respectful attitude towards opponents
Perfect sportsmanship
Is the commitment worth it?
Only if you want to find out what you’re really made of!
So I have one question for you.
Do you have the heart, dedication, durability and resilience to make your potential shine through?
If so join us!
