Action At the '07 State Finals |
New blocks were in position for the US National Championships to be held the following day. Perceptive athletes went over early to check out settings. Here Joanna Timmons and a teammate find adjustments. |
At race time NDA's Joanna was ready to go. She placed 8th in trials (7.53) and 7th overall in 7.54. |
Warming up for high jump. |
Stoneham's Christina Izzicupo (far left) was 4th in high jump at 5'3. She won both the 300M and anchored the winning 4X400. At far right is Oliver Ames sophomore Laura Weeks who placed 2nd in D2 at 5'3. Today she jumped 4'11 for 13th place. |
Mansfield hurdler Meghan Ferreira works on starts before the meet. |
Getting ready for trials. |
The first flight.Lane 6 had the best start. |
In the center of the track Stephanie Reusch (ORR senior) and Meghan Ferreira (Mansfield soph) get out quickly. Their times (8.61-8.47) placed them 4th and 3rd in the finals. Notice how centered they are on the lane. |
Notice how far the athlete in lane 6 has drifted to the right. His next few steps will require adjustments before he's ready to focus all his energy in the direction of the hurdles. My observation is that most coaching of the starts is done from the side (concentrating on important elements of body position and first step), thus making this harder to pick up on. It may not be the case in this instance, but I wanted to use this as a teachable moment for beginning coaches. |
