GRADING
IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students
are graded on the basis of their performance in class and written evaluations.
Performance
in class is based on the consistancy of participation, quality of performance
and adherence to school expectations.
- Consistency - Students
are expected to participate in all scheduled classes. If a student's days
of participation fall below 80% of the scheduled classes, the student must
arrange to make up classes until that level is reached. Failure to meet an
80% participation level will cause a student to fail that unit. If the student
changes for class but does not take part in the activity it is not considered
a participation day. For an explanation of how to make up classes missed for
absence, field trips and medical issues follow this
link.
- Quality - Quality is
judged relative to a student's level of ability. It is a measure of the effort
to set goals and work toward improvement. When grading quality of performance,
it is not a measure of inherant talent or physical gifts, but rather what
the student does with those skills and gifts during class.
- School Expectations -
There is a general rubric used to judge
the student's adherance to school expectations. There are more specific rubrics
associated with some units of instruction.
Written
evaluations are used to gauge the student's knowledge of sports, comprehension
and application of concepts, and the ability to communicate through writing.
- Knowledge - Students
are expected to learn sufficient skills, terminology, rules and strategy to
successfully participate in physical activities including sports.
- Comprehension and application
of concepts - Students are expected to know the concepts of physical fitness,
the benefits of physical exercise and the effects of both as they relate to
lifetime health. They are expected to demonstrate the ability to formulate
and carry out a personal fitness plan. Students are also expected to demonstrate
knowledge of how they meet school-wide expectations through physical education.
- Communication - The physical
education department supports the concept that writing skills are critical
lifetime skills that need to be reinforced throughout the curriculum. Therefor
the department requires that students express themselves coherently through
writing, write legibly and phrase their thoughts and answers in complete sentences.
